Better
a couple of months late than never, right?
So,
Captain America: Civil War is the second Captain America movie
directed by the Russo brothers and stars, well, the Avengers (minus Thor and
the Hulk). If you've seen the trailers, then you'll know what this movie is
about (actually, it's sort-of like general knowledge at this point to know the
basic premise of this movie). That being said, I think this is Marvel's best
movie since the first Avengers.
Now,
it was always gonna be difficult to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier
(also directed by the Russo's), which was a great movie in its own right. It
had kick-ass action, great intrigue, and an interesting set of twists that
ultimately kept you on the edge of your seat as you were watching it. And,
ultimately, the Russo's understood the idea of making a sequel and built on
what made the predecessor great while adding a lot of interesting new stuff to
it.
First
of all, I really enjoyed the action in this movie; that was awesome.
The hits looked really solid and were all sold really well, too. And the
pay-offs were all great for the tension building up to them. Everything was
just satisfying to watch. Even seeing the new Spiderman was satisfying to see.
And
part of what made the action really entertaining to watch was the snappy dialog
they had here and there. While I know I took the piss out on Gods of Egypt for having a bunch of
s**t-talkers, the way the Russo’s executed it in this movie didn’t quite beat
you over the head the way Alex Proyas did with Gods of Egypt. The banter was all there, and nothing ever felt
out-of-character for anyone.
Another
thing I really liked about this movie was that this movie really does excel at
building tension and pulling you into a scene before the big fight comes on.
The dialog and the interaction between characters were gripping and
interesting, and actually really got your thought process going. In a sense, it
has you weighing both sides of this “civil war” in your brain, and it makes you
pick a side.
But,
as with any other movie, Civil War
isn’t perfect, and I did pinpoint a couple of flaws in
the movie.
Like
I mentioned earlier, if you’ve seen the trailers, you pretty much know what
this movie is all about. Nothing really surprises you in this movie if you’ve
actively paid attention to the marketing campaign.
And
I thought that the villain was pretty weak, too. Other than just setting up the
final showdown in the movie – pretty much because he had to – and kind of just
setting the story on its way, he didn’t really do much else.
In
spite of these flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed Captain
America: Civil War, and it is definitely deserving of a Big George.
I’m
actually really excited to see Spiderman:
Homecoming now. Thanks, Tom Holland.
